About MeLooking towards the Northern Co-operative Society's buildings at Berryden, circa 1910. The horticultural scene in the foreground is probably Nicol's Market Garden which occupied a site next to the Co-op. Aberdeen's Northern Co-operative Company (later the Society) was founded in 1861. Its first shop was on the city's Gallowgate. Twenty years later, in 1881, the Co-op built a large meal mill at Berryden. This multi-storey building supplied oatmeal to the business's thousands of customers. By the 1890s the NCS was thriving sufficiently for the Berryden site to expand to include a grocery warehouse, bakery and a sausage factory. In 1928 a very modern dairy was added. This supplied a pure supply of milk. Berryden became the central warehousing and manufacturing site for the Co-op. But the business hit hard times in the 1980s. Unable to meet its debts the Northern Co-op went into liquidation on the 17th June 1993. Assets, including Berryden were sold off.
