About MeBaby's white cotton smock-style overdress with shallow yoke, capped sleeves and whitework embroidered decoration.

White cotton was used extensively during the 19th and early 20th centuries for children's clothes. Overdresses like this one, which dates to around the 1920s, were worn over a dress made from a dark material. The purpose of the overdress was to protect the dress and because it was made from cotton, it could be laundered repeatedly.

This particular dress might have been worn by the donor's sister.
