About MeConroy's painting remains firmly rooted in the tradition of the nineteenth century. The work of Edgar Degas and Walter Richard Sickert are his chief influences. The dark interior, stiffly dressed figures and a brooding silence are redolent of a pre-modern period. Like many of Conroy's compositions this one is homocentric, with dramatic gesture and side lighting. The figures are placed friezelike, across the canvas where pictorial space is shallow. Like Ken Currie, Stephen Conroy graduated from Glasgow School of Art and rose to fame rapidly. Alongside Adrian Wiszniewski and Steven Campbell he has come to represent the rebirth of figurative painting in Scotland during the 1980s.More About Me
