About MeAlthough the finished painting "Evening Star" has Surrealist influences, Cowie's studies for finished paintings belong to a drawing tradition that dates back to the Renaissance.

Each part of the figure was accurately drawn and thought through before it was included in the final painting. In this work he seems to have changed his mind about whether the right leg should be placed apart from the left leg or next to it. In the final picture, he has changed his mind again and has placed the right leg slightly behind the left.

More About Me
Study for the figure on the left of the finished painting which is also in the collection. Here the artist has to yet decide on the disposition of the legs.
