About MeThe first of Nelson's victories took place on 1st August, 1798 in Aboukir Bay, and has since been known as the Battle of the Nile. In the course of an afternoon and night action of the utmost ferocity , Nelson destroyed an anchored fleet under the command of Admiral Brueys. It was the escorting force of a large military expedition, led by Napoleon Bonaparte, whose object was to subjugate Egypt and to extend French influence throughout the Orient.

The most sensational incident in the attack was the explosion of the massive flagship L'Orient, which had in her holds treasures obtained during the French seizure of Malta, which had been a preliminary move before the voyage to Alexandria. As a result of the battle, 11 out of 13 ships of the line and two frigates were captured or destroyed, and Bonaparte's communication with Europe was severed.

At the time, Nelson was a junior Rear Admiral, and it was his first important independent command. It brought him a peerage and world renown, and it gave new hope to a Europe which had been shaken and bewildered by a succession of French victories. Tactically it was a masterpiece. 'Victory is not a name strong enough for such a scene', wrote Nelson, as he surveyed the sea around him on the day following the encounter.
