About MeThe Fogarty Catheter works on the principle of placing a catheter within an artery; the distal end of the catheter has a small balloon attached. The purpose of the catheter is to remove blood clots. It is slid into an artery, past the blood clot. The balloon is then inflated and slowly the catheter is withdrawn, pulling the clot clear. This is a minimal invasive procedure which can be done under a local anaesthetic. Previous procedure had required large incisions which caused trauma to the patient and could result in the need for amputation or death. Thomas Fogarty first employed the balloon catheter technique on human patients in 1961.
