About MeThe Aberdeen artist Robert Brough studied at the Royal Scottish Academy, where he began to develop his unique, essentially Post Impressionist style. He also spent time travelling abroad, particularly in Paris, Brittany and Morocco, to explore different movements and styles of painting and drawing. Latterly Brough, painted mostly portraits, in the style of his close friend John Singer Sargent. The artist died tragically from severe burns sustained in a train crash near Sheffield in 1905.

This painting is actually a copy of the portrait by George Reid and it is assumed that Brough, being a friend and neighbour of Reid was asked to do this copy for the family of the sitter.

Peter Esslemont (1834-1894), was Lord Provost of Aberdeen 1880-1882. A Scottish Liberal politician, Esslemont was Liberal Member of Parliament for East Aberdeenshire from 1885 -1892.
