This painting is actually a copy of the portrait by George Reid and it is assumed that Brough, being a friend and neighbour of Reid was asked to do this copy for the family of the sitter.
Peter Esslemont (1834-1894), was Lord Provost of Aberdeen 1880-1882. A Scottish Liberal politician, Esslemont was Liberal Member of Parliament for East Aberdeenshire from 1885 -1892.
