About MeThis work is typical of Peploe's early style, before he adopted his Colourist palette. In contrast to the later still-lifes, his early paintings are characterised by a restrained use of colour - grey, white, black, with only a touch of vibrant colour. This composition displays a Japanese-inspired design in its angular, flattened forms and the bright red dash of the fan in the centre, whilst the brushwork is fluid and loose.

In 1905, Peploe moved into the studio which had been built in last years of the 18th century for the portrait painter Henry Raeburn. A description of Peploe's studio decor, '...pale grey with a hint of pink; on the floor he had a black polished linoleum... a few chairs, an antique bureau' could be applied to this painting.
