About MeSamuel John Peploe first visited Comrie in Perth and Kinross to paint at the beginning of the 1900s. His sister lived there with her husband and it provided a large number of painting opportunities for the developing artist.
This work, simply entitled Comrie, was painted in oils onto a board and is probably a study. Painting outside forced Peploe to be more spontaneous in the way he painted and this is visible in the swirling brushstrokes of the sky and the flowing river, which reflects the orange glow of the sunset above. He attempts to record the atmosphere and conditions of the scene with an immediacy similar to the Impressionists, such as Monet.
