About MeGeorge Leslie Hunter frequently sojourned in France and his notebooks express an admiration for the work of van Gogh, Gauguin, Cézanne and particularly Matisse. However, unlike the other Colourists, Hunter was not directly involved with the Cubist and Fauvist artists in Paris and these influences only came to the fore in his mature work, sometime after 1925.In 'Anemones' Hunter shows a debt in particular to Paul Cézanne. Intuitively painted, there is spontaneity and vigour in these broadly petalled anemones and their instinctive, jumbled arrangement in the vase.
