About MeFirst developed in 1948 in Portugal USA an endarterectomy is the removal of a blockage (occlusion) or the thickened inner wall of a diseased, damaged blood vessel. In open surgery a loop is placed within the vessel, its edge is sharpened to cut and remove diseased area and in doing this it cuts a cleaner and smoother canal for the passage of blood.
