About MeThe Emergency Standby Vessel Silver Pit in Aberdeen Harbour in the 1980's.
Silver Pit was like the majority of such vessels in the UK sector in the 1980's a converted retired fishing vessel.
It was on duty at Piper Alpha in 1988 when the catastophic explosion completely destroyed the platform and 167 men were killed. Depite the desperate attempts by the crew such vessels were incapable of effectively dealing with the situation. New legislation in the 1990's forced such vessels like Silver Pit into retirement.
