About MeBorn in Jamaica, West Indies on July 27, 1879. Mme. DeVerley lived in London, England for many years where she conducted the Scarab Salon and studied with Sir Wm Orpen and Richard Jack. She further studied in Berlin with Berkowski before returning to Jamaica. Her studio in the West Indies was destroyed by earthquake; she then moved to Los Angeles in 1920. During the 1920s and 1930s, she painted "mask" portraits and was active in the local art scene as the wife of actor Captain Vesey O'Davore.

This object is part of an archive that belonged to Marguerite McBey. As a result of her generosity, Aberdeen Art Gallery holds the largest archive of James McBey's work, including prints, drawings, sketchbooks, oil paintings and memorabilia such as this photograph.
