This decoration is in fact a Masonic Jewel. Freemasonary is a secular fraternal society that is said to have originated in Scotland in the late sixteenth century. This particular jewel is that of a Founder, and was awarded to the member who founded the Royal Braemar Masonic Lodge, located in Newmachar, in 1919. The medal reads 'FOUNDER/ 1919/ LODGE ROYAL BRAEMAR/ NO. 1195'.
The jewel is stored in green cardboard box with the label of William Robb (Jeweller) on the lid.
