About MeThis painting was influenced by Cairns’ thoughts of young men going to war in the Gulf. The harbour setting, however, is the village of Footdee at the mouth of Aberdeen Harbour.
The painting’s jumbled arrangement of figures, boats, lighthouses and cottages has been specifically designed to create a claustropobic and chaotic mood, similar to Cairns’ imaginings of the young soldiers’ feelings. The whole effect grew from a series of sketches, sometimes of real life scenes but other times of imagined people and places.
