Funded by public subscription. The list of subscribers includes a number of individuals with indirect links to chattel slavery (mainly through marriage), for instance, Robert Smith, who married Margaret Glennie of Maybank (daughter of the enslaver, Alexander Glennie).
There are also a few direct links, such as the Blaikie brothers (made equipment for use on plantations) and a number of prominent shipbuilders in Aberdeen (built ships for use in the West Indian plantation trade).
