Hitchcock was one of a number of young American artists drawn to Europe in the wake of Realism and Impressionism. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island. When in his twenties, he abandoned his career in law and studied art, first in England, then in Paris, at the Académie Julian and finally with Hendrik Mesdag in The Hague. By 1881, he had settled in Holland, in the town of Egmond near Amsterdam, where he set about painting from nature. His work often has a religious overtones but presented within the context of contemporary genre.
