John InglisLarbert, Scotland, born 1953

Inglis’ painting can be seen to share common ground with the work of other artists who populated the Aberdeen area and the Scottish east coast; notably his teachers at Gray’s, Sylvia Wishart and Bill Littlejohn, and also artists like Ian McKenzie-Smith.

The artist is greatly influenced by the coast, both in Angus and most recently undertaking a residency in Orkney. The resulting images are not representation, but refined abstractions emphasising surface, line and shape. Using a subtle, limited palette, structure and composition are fundamental to Inglis’ work. Over the years, the artist has been particularly praised for his skill in watercolour.

John Inglis served as the President of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour from 2005 - 2016.
