Re-framing the Collection
The abolition of slavery seemed to have been a contentious issue during the early-19th century and was the primary subject of interest in  many of the letters sent to the editors of the Aberdeen Press and Journal during this time.

During the abolitionist movement The Press and Journal was at this time run by the famous Chalmers publishing dynasty and the Journal itself was particularly sympathetic to the cause. Members of the Chalmers family were supporters and subscribers to the Anti-Slavery Society and many of the pamphlets and related ephemera were printed by the Society at the Chambers' publishing company on Adelphi.
