Born in 1888, william Stuart Lawrence left school in 1902 (aged 13) and worked in the granite industry like his father before him. He wanted to get married, so went to Boston and worked in the USA for about 4 years from 1910, returning in 1914 and marrying. He served with the Signals in France from 1915 until the end of the war and returned home to Bedford Place. He worked with various yards (Charles MacDonald's, Fyfe's, McKay's and AA Brown as a carver of high ability. He contracted silicosis and was advised to leave the industry but was still in demand and was offered a job as foreman at AA Brown where he worked from about 1915 to 1935. He retired in 1953 and died in 1975, aged 87.
