Re-framing the Collection
Provost Daniel Mearns originally worked as a ship’s chandler for Peter Buyers at Regent Quay. His sister, Janet ‘Jessie’ Mearns, married Peter Buyers, a grocer and spirit dealer, and also became a noted ship’s chandler. Their father, also Daniel Mearns, was a shipmaster and owned or had shares in many of the ships in the Aberdeen merchant trade. This included shares in the ship Pacific, which sailed to Jamaica.
