Architect and Lord Provost of Aberdeen. Educated at Robert Gordon’s Hospital he began his career as an assistant with Archibald Simpson’s Architectural Practice. He set up a partnership with A. Marshall MacKenzie and designed Albyn Terrace, Aberdeen Music Hall, the Tivoli Theatre and Langstane Kirk. Matthews entered local government in 1863 and was elected Lord Provost in 1883.
