The son of Bernard Leach, David Leach played a crucial role in the survival of his father's pottery. He attended a technical course at Stoke-on-Trent between 1934 and 1936, which encouraged him to introduce new kilns and develop the use of stoneware at St Ives. His modernising of the workshop ensured the survival of the production range. However, he did not realise his full potential until he left St Ives in 1956 to set up Lowerdown Pottery at Bovey Tracey. He is now known for his distinctive stonewares and use of porcelain.
