Robert Sharpe Harvey was born in Rhynie, Huntly in 1897. He attended the Gordon Schools, Huntly and Gordon's College, Aberdeen.
He was made Royal Arch Mason in the Buckburn chapter of the Freemasons 19/01/1920.
He served his apprenticeship as an Engineer Fitter at the Hall Russell yard. He later joined the Orient Steam Navigation Company as an Engineer.
He served on the 'Orcades' which was torpedoed on 09/10/1942 by U-172 300 miles south-west of the Cape of Good Hope.The 1,022 survivors were rescued by the Polish steamer 'Narvick', 48 died.
