Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was a Dutch ex-patriate who lived most of his life in England Born in Dronrijp, the Netherlands, and trained at the Academy of Antwerp, Belgium, he settled in England in 1869. Tadema was an extremely successful painter during the Victorian era. During his sixty productive years Tadema produced over 400 known paintings and had some success designing musical instruments as well. His paintings are noted for fine detail, smooth finish, and the realistic representations of textures.
