Kate Downie
Kate Downie was born in America of British parentage, but returned to live in the North East of Scotland at the age of 7. She studied Fine Art at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen, including post graduate studies. Her work often describes a point in the land where many roads meet; the creative concern is to define these spaces between buildings rather than the buildings themselves. As she depicts these public arenas of cumulative activity, Downie also attempts to find a sort of poetry in the ordinary.
As the notion of place is significant in her work, she has held artists’ residencies in the USA, Amsterdam, Paris and more recently Corsica and Norway. She has also taught in various colleges and universities.
Recent projects include ‘Shared Vision’, a 2016 exhibition of works made in response to her experiences of China.
