William Duthie was a member of the Duthie family who had extensive shipping and ship building interests in Aberdeen He spent part of his life in Stonehaven and painted portraits, landscape, seascape as well as shipping scenes, and exhibited works at the RSA, Glasgow Institute as well as the AAS.

Initially he recorded his address as Ashley Lodge, Great Western Road, Aberdeen.

He moved to London in 1892. he was mainly active between 1886-1919.
