Normandykes

Evaluation carried out in October 1997 by the Aberdeen City Council Archaeological Unit in an area 30m to the south of the south-east corner of the Roman temporary marching camp at Normandykes, Peterculter, prior to erection of an Orange telecommunications mast. One trench 6.40m square was excavated. The topsoil was removed by machine, and the surface hand- cleaned. A cut feature was recognised, a section of it excavated and an earth cable for the electricity pole discovered. Two sherds of pottery were analysed, but they were not Roman, and were probably fragments of field drains. The finds from this site are in the collections of Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums.
