About MeJoão Louro's 'Blind Images' are a series of monochromatic canvases. The text caption or subtitle may identify the work as a still from a film or an image from a magazine or newspaper but in reality there is no image, just an expanse of flat colour with text underneath. Whatever the media source, the textual quotation offers the spectator a familiar frame of reference. Sometimes the text invokes a celebrity but it might just as easily reference an event; in Louro's elegiac twin towers paintings the over used and unpalatable images of the disaster are replaced by an expanse of black acrylic. In this example, Blind Image No 92, the media starlet Paris Hilton is the point of reference and we can suppose that the text caption is taken from a celebrity magazine.

The monochromatic canvas - superimposed with highly reflective perspex - behaves like a mirror and draws the viewer and immediate surroundings into the construct of the work. Louro cultivates this accidental effect. The glossy precision and quality of finish suggest an affinity with contemporary styling. Advertising and signage, the polish of designer living and the superficial glamour of celebrity have all informed Louro's art.
