About MeSir James Maitland Bart. of Sauchie and Barnton, Stirlingshire founded the world's first scientific research fish farm, Howietoun Fish Farm at Bannockburn, Stirling, where he produced improved trout fry . Recently the Howietoun fish farm came into the hands of the University of Stirling and extensive restoration of this monument to Victorian biological science has allowed it to become once more the source of brown trout as well as salmon smolts for fish farms.

Reid painted Maitland's full length portrait in 1892 for the County Hall in Stirling and a replica of the head for the sitter's daughter in 1900.
