About MeJames Cadenhead was born in Aberdeen, the only son of the Procurator-Fiscal. He received artistic encouragement from John Forbes White, a prominent flour miller and art collector. Cadenhead attended the Royal Scottish Academy schools in Edinburgh and in 1882, he went to Paris to study at the atelier of Carolus-Duran.

The linear, simple composition, floral arrangement and subtle tonalities of this portrait evince the new aesthetic that was deeply indebted to Whistler and to Japanese art.
