About MeThe story of the Thermopylae inspired John Bishop to create this painting. An accomplished self-taught artist, Bishop, a school teacher by profession, was fascinated by rail and sea transport. He was active in steam railway preservation and his works on that subject are drawn from first hand experience. By contrast his maritime works such as that of the Thermopylae had their origin in written and pictorial accounts of the great sailing ships.
