About MeIan McKenzie Smith trained at Gray's School of Art. He later went on to become Director of the Art Gallery in Aberdeen from 1968 to 1989. He became Aberdeen's City Arts and Recreation Officer from 1989 to 1996. In 1992 he was awarded the OBE for his services to Art and a CBE in the 2009 New Year's Honours list. He was also until recently, President of the Royal Scottish Academy.

Ian McKenzie Smith is best known for his Japanese inspired watercolours, oil paintings and screenprints. This very early work - an abstract boxed construction - shows an atypical aspect of his output.
