About MeRichard Smith is today regarded as one of Britain's best abstract artists. He had a retrospective at the Tate Gallery as long ago as 1975, a remarkable achievement for an artist who was at that time in his early forties. Smith's 'Kite' paintings began as a reaction against the practical difficulties of making, transporting and storing the large shaped canvases, and were initially inspired by a tent he had designed in 1966. The three pieces of stretched canvas are suspended from lengths of string simply slipped over a hook or nail. The satisfying way the sections relate to each other, the beautifully contrived tilt of each wooden strut, contradict the works studied informality.
