About MeThe inscription on the binoculars reads: From the President of the United States to Thomas Watson master of the British steam trawler Lord Talbot in recognition of his humane seamanship in affecting the rescue off the coast of Greenland of the passengers and crew of the American airplane City of Richmond in 1932.The Hutchinson family were celebrated aviaton pioneers, and had left New York in a Sikorsky amphibian aeroplane in an attempt to cross the Atlantic and be the first family to have done so.
The Lord Talbot was fishing off the East Greenland coast and went to rescue them and eventually carrying them and the aircraft crew to Aberdeen where they arrived and were given a heroic welcome on 22nd September 1932.
