The bedcover is constructed from linen panels joined using a blanket stitch. The central field is made up from 30 squares with alternating embroidered designs worked in blue green and brown wool in various textures and stitches. There is also a row of an all over foliate design followed by a row of single foliate motifs and blank squares giving a chequered effect. The top and bottom edges are made up from 3 plain narrow panels and the sides from similar large panels embroidered with the coat of arms of George Skene - a central shield with the head of a suit of armour above the motto "gratis/a deo/data" flanked by the initials "GS" and worked on either side with scrolling foliage and an all over cross pattern. There is also a long knotted wool fringe.
The bedspread was worked over 18 months by 33 girls (all senior pupils) of the under the direction of Mrs Cruikshank.
