About MeBlack velvet domed smoking cap constructed from 6 triangular panels each of which have been embroidered in coloured silks with flowers, including forget-me-nots and red rose buds. There is also a long thick tassel of coloured silk threads attached to the crown via a large round button covered with thread and embroidered with a gold star. The cap is lined with black glazed cotton.

Victorian gentlemen usually changed out of their formal attire into a more comfortable jacket and cap in the evening and retired to their libraries or studies to smoke and relax. The main purpose of the hat and jacket was to prevent the wearer's hair and other clothes from smelling of smoke. In the winter months they would also have aided in keeping him warm.
