About MeGerald Benney (1930 - 2008), is considered to be the leading post-war designer silversmith of the 20th century and became the first British craftsman to receive four royal warrants. He began his studies at Brighton College of Art and in 1950 won a place at the Royal College of Art, London, where he was awarded a Prince of Wales scholarship in his first year. It was here he met fellow students David Mellor and Robert Welch and together the group would revolutionise post-war silver design. In 1959 he was appointed Consultant Designer to Viners of Sheffield, designing pieces for silver, pewter and stainless steel production.
From 1974 - 1983 he was a professor at the RCA where he taught jewellery and metalwork.
Influenced by pre-WW2, post-war and Scandinavian minimalism Benney is known for his clean, defined lines.
