About MeInfluenced by pre-WW2, post-war and Scandinavian minimalism Gerald Benney (1930 - 2008) is known for his clean, defined lines and the 'Benney Bark Finish', an innovative method of texturing silver with tiny striations, initially achieved by a bent hammer. This process eliminates tarnish and fingerprints and creates an attractive finish which became his signature. Having studied at the Royal College of Art in the 1950s he returned in 1974 as a professor where he taught jewellery and metalwork until 1983. This jug is of compressed circular form worked with bark-effect textured bellied sides below a polished rim. The underside of base is stamped 'GERALD BENNEY LONDON'. It is hallmarked. This piece illustrates his iconic silversmithing technique, the 'Bark Finish'.
More About Me
The artist’s own “Bark Finish” involved texturing silver with tiny lines, made mainly with a bent hammer, which eliminated tarnish and fingerprints.
