About MePart of an extensive collection of artefacts from Richard Irvin's maritime supply activities.
This is used in salemaking. Much of the work of making and repairing sails was once done by hand. The sails required to be hemmed and this was achieved by rubbing the crease strongly with a device like this in order to make a hard edge that could then be stitched.
