About MeThis very striking two-piece silk dress illustrates the height of fashion in the Edwardian period. Comprising a high necked blouse-style bodice with lace inserts and trimmed with exquisite embroidered braiding and pearls and a long flared skirt.

Fitted jacket or blouse-style bodices were popular for day dresses, particularly if they were trimmed with lace and other embellishments. They would often be worn with high-necked lace inserts at the front. Three-quarter length sleeves were also a feature, sometimes with tight lace cuffs attached from the elbow down to the wrist. The shorter sleeve allowed for the wearing of long gloves, which was the etiquette for evening and outdoor daywear.

More About Me
Beautiful but restrictive dresses such as this reached their height of popularity in the years before World War One but after the war middle- and upper-class women demanded greater simplicity and freedom of movement.
