About MeThis tall horn and silver claret jug was made by the Aberdeen horn and comb manufacturers S.R. Stewart & Co. It can be dated to between 1883 and 1884, from the London hallmarks, which are stamped on the silver mounts. The applied decoration in gilt, bone and mother of pearl of beautifully crafted birds and insects also helps to date this piece. The use of semi-precious materials is typical of the Art Nouveau movement, as is the elegant sinuous shape of the jug, whilst the oriental subject matter - cranes, chrysanthemums, bamboo and dragonflies - typifies the style, 'japonisme' which was popular throughout Europe during the late 19th century.
