About MeNorwegian type foghorns were once standard equipment aboard seagoing vessels of all sizes. . It was wound manually an emitted a deep booming sound with the box acting as an extra sounding 'box'. It was able to be used even if the ship had lost steam. They were finally withdrawn in the 1960's.This image shows the internal mechanism.
