About MeThis painting is very close in style to a sketchbook, also in the collections of Aberdeen Art Gallery, which dates from 1828-9 and contains the work of an amateur artist, possibly Alexander Anderson Seton (1769-1850) or possibly juvenile work by his eldest son Alexander Seton (1815-1852). The sketchbook contains views of the artist's family home, Seton Hall, Mounie, situated three miles north west of Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire and also scenes of New and Old Aberdeen, including Dee Street, the Bridge of Don and the Bridge of Dee and also views of Broadstairs and Thainstone. In this painting the artist picks out in some detail the various buildings around this iconic and ancient bridge, some of which are still extant. He also depicts men line and net fishing - a common practice when the salmon were once plentiful. Although the figures are somewhat naively drawn the landscape and sky show the artist's proficiency and the whole effect is both realistic and atmospheric.
