This picture could either be an artist's self portrait, the artist having identified himself with St Luke or one of a set of four tondos depicting all the Evangelists. Each Evangelist was given a winged symbol; a lion for St Mark, an eagle for St John, a man for St Matthew and a bull for St Luke. The bull can be seen behind St Luke's shoulder.
This painting was the gift of Miss Martha Sombor. She was a refugee from the Hungarian Revolution in 1957. Miss Sombor loved her time in Aberdeen and this painting, brought from her home country Hungary is her way of saying 'Thank you' to the City where she found happiness.
