About MeLetter adressed from the Thermopylae,written by Capt. Charles Matheson in 1875 whilst in the port at Fuzhou in China. Fuzhou (Foochow) was one of the treaty ports open to to ships and trade under the terms of the Nanking Agreement (1842).

The letter gives an idea of the delays in getting news to and from home and family for mariners. It also tells of the perils of delivering letters to the mail packet ships. In this instance the boy charged with doing so was effectively kidnapped and not allowed to get off the steamer.
