About MeThis is an image of Thermopylae in its heyday by Jack Spurling. Spurling was born in London in 1870. From an early age he was fascinated by the ships he saw and the work taking place aboard them and sketched all he saw when visiting the quaysides. He went on to serve seven years aboard sailing vessels voyaging all over the world whilst continuing the draw and paint maritime subjects.
Spurling is perhaps best remembered for his work in the sailing magazine "Blue Peter" and his association with Basil Lubbock in providing the dramatic and detailed illustrations of the great vessels in a series of books dedicated to the greats of the 'age of sail'.
