About MeVery large black straw hat with oversized crown and brim, seen here decorated with chiffon and ostrich feathers

Over-sized hats became fashionable when designer Lucile (Lady Duff-Gordon) created the original 'widow hat' for the actress Miss Lily Elsie for the operetta "Merry Widows", which gave the hat its name. It was always black and made of straw and encased in chiffon or organdie and festooned with feathers or flowers. This iconic Edwardian style remained in fashion for three years.
