About MeF.C.B. Cadell's artistic talents were recognised early and encouraged by prominent Scottish artist Arthur Melville he went to Paris to study art at the Académie Julian.

Cadell first visited Iona in the Inner Hebrides in 1912 and for the next twenty years he spent most summers there. The quality of the west coast light, coupled with the startlingly bright effects created by sand, sea and sky, proved to be a great impetus for his art. The fluid brushwork and use of vibrant colour, which Cadell had discovered whilst painting in the south of France, was not abandoned when he returned to Scotland and is much in evidence in this painting.

The artist spent many summers on the Scottish island Iona in the Inner Hebrides. The many different shades of green and blue in this painting bring it to life.
