About MePrincipally a painter of sea and landscapes, James Cassie also had surprising talent as an animal painter. These skills might have come from his teacher James Giles (1801-1870) who was notably famous as an animal draughtsman and a highland landscapist. Animals were also present in Cassie's early landscapes.
There is a great attention to the character of the dog in small details such as the single alert ear and the odd positioning of the front legs, lending a sentimental air to the animal. Throughout his life, it seems that Cassie had a soft spot for terriers.
